A Mess with Glenn

I don't know why my figure drawing took a nose dive today. I think it's a combination of not really practicing this week and the neck problems - I've been having. I just can't get comfortable. Oh Well!!! I guess it's all part of the process.

Capturing Nature's Beauty: Three Centuries of French Landscapes

I went to see the exhibit on Saturday "Capturing Nature's Beauty: Three Centuries of French Landscapes" it was really inspirational. All drawing, inks, watercolors . . . the stuff I love. I bought the catalogue which means a lot for me (I don't just buy everything). It made me want to continue with my sketching which is good to be reminded.

Leon Bonvin: "Landscape with a Bare Tree and A Plowman." The jewel-like quality of Bonvin's watercolors are something I haven't seen or notived before. According to the catalogue: "Distressed by a life of poverty and frustration, Bonvin committed suicide at the age of thirty-one after an art dealer deemed his works 'too dark, not gay enough." Yikes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did these down at the Sketch Crawl which visited Angel's Flight, Central Market and the Bradbury Building.

Zoo Scribbles

Went to the zoo with Linda to animal draw. These are the best of a bad lot. I need to work on this. Hopefully next semester I can take an animal drawing class at LAAFA.

Studio II - Uninstructed workshop

I drew at Studio II in Culver City this morning. One Sunday a month the session is 4 hours instead of 3 with an extra hour of gesture drawing. Today was that day!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a 30 minute pose although I think I drew for about 20 minutes because I was blowing my nose and coughing a lot because I have the flu.

These next poses are 20 minutes poses complete with coughing and nose blowing.

I tried to work on some of the stuff Glenn was talking about yesterday in class. Below are 2 minutes poses just like yesterdays in Glenn's class. I feel like they are better than yesterday's drawings. I worked smaller and used marker instead of conte. What I can't seem to do is not connect my lines. Glenn moves from one side of the figure to the other and doesn't connect his lines (I think it's part of his point to point process). I get lost when I do that. I tried to use less straights today and not worry about proportion. I'm still drawing the contour line instead of the action line. Oh well! I just learned about that yesterday so I will probably not be able to do it for a long time.

"Never a Day without a Line" - Vilppu Class 1

2 minute poses with conte.

Went back to Glenn Vilppu this Saturday for his new Figure Drawing Class at the Animation Union. He was filled with enthusiasm from his recent trip to Denmark and some Rubens drawings he had seen.
Glenn talked about how he makes his new Rubens type drawings.
He also talked about how every drawing should start the same way - not with shape but with action.
1. Analyze the action.
2. Generally start with the head.
3. Feel the pose (get up if you need to)
4. Draw how one part of the figure relates to the next.
5. The whole pose should be down in 1 minute.
6. The lines you draw aren't the center or contour they are the feeling of the action.
7. It is not a stick figure - they are lines that lead you through the figure.
8. you have to use your emotions you can't be totally cerebral
Second Stage
1. draw landmarks like rib cage, pit of the neck
2. build volumes
3. think about compresion and stretch
4. contain volumes.
Other advice
1. your best assest is your flexibility to draw anything at all no matter if you are looking at it or not
2. forget about contour and focus on gesture
3. gesture is the sould of the drawing.
4. Drawing is like Tai Chi and Karate - need to connect the neurons so it can be spontaneously choreographed.
5. Go slow
6. Don't make the same line over and over again.
He also told us this quote by the greek panter, Appelles "Never a Day without a line."

We did a lot of 2 minute poses. I didn't draw very well! Glenn told me I had too many straights and needed to loosen up - he thought my line quality was stiff.

More Lawrence of Arabia

I am continuing to study the compositions in Lawrence of Arabia with my 3 markers. I woke up at 4am this morning and did some. I'm hoping to eventually use this in my graphic novel.

Studio D - Santa Fe Art Colony - Long Pose Workshop

I'm not exactly sure how to draw one thing for 6 hours, one day I hope to learn. So I did a couple of things at the long pose event in the Santa Fe Art Colony in Studio D. I think I did a good job. I am sad right now that I didn't get into Kevin Chen's Analytical Figure Drawing Class but I think I'm going to take Costume Drawing at LAAFA with Mark McDowell.

The Drawing Club - Hawaii Theme

Last night I felt like I was drawing like a 5 year old when I did these at the Drawing Club but this morning I don't feel quite as ashamed.
