Figure Drawing - Wednesday Nights

The last two Wednesdays I sat in on Kathy Karol's class at Santa Monica College.  I don't believe my work schedule will allow this luxury anymore this Fall/Winter but I did it for 2 weeks and it always makes me happy. These are some of my favorite poses week 1 with Mia.

 I can't remember the name of this model but he does amazing poses with a stick.  We also did these animation inspired drawings where the figure moves.

Head Drawing in Pencil

It was an incredible week of drawing. One that I wish I could match every week. I worked on my "How to Project" for Communication Sketch a lot. Still not finished. I went to Cathy's class on Wednesday. Got there at 4:45 and drew past 9pm. I went to Turkish Delights on Friday night and stayed there a little under 3 hours. I then had 2 classes on Saturday: Basic Cartooning and Drawing from the Imagination. And then I ended the night going to a demo by Steve Huston and drawing about an hour in charcoal.
I really want to study more with Glen Orbik. He's like going to a primary source at the library. I'm going to figure out how to make that happen. I think if the Peter Knight Pilot goes I will do that until I have to go back to work. I realized last night I love the poetry in his drawing.

I feel happy with these heads. I think there is a fluidity here that I don't seem to have with the charcoal pencil. I need to work more with it so I can figure out how to make it move.

Andy is a great model. I am going to use him as the Old Gambler in the Hymn of the Pearl.

Went to Cathy's class this week because work was drawing to a close and I could make it over there. The lesson was on Head Drawing. Went to Wine Expo afterwards as has become our tradition.

Torso Lesson - inspired by Van Gogh

Wednesday night was the torso lesson. I remember it from last year when I was in Cathy's class. This is my favorite drawing of the night. The Torso drawings are inspired by Van Gogh

I have a lot of problems with the lying down poses and foreshortening. I need to work on these.

Figure Drawing -

I sat in on Cathy Karol's class today which I took last spring. Tonight was the lesson on the sphere based on Glenn Vilppu's sphere lesson. I missed the lesson because I came in late. Some of it was about finding the bean. I need to check into this more with my Vilppu Drawing Manual.

Cathy also commented that I need to work on my feet. I am going to copy some stuff.

Mia at Cathy Karol's Class - inspiration Heinrich Kley

This is one of the images the Cathy Karol gave out for us to look at it tonight. It was drawn by Heinrich Kley.


Heinrich Kley (1863-1945) was a German artist who gained fame in the United States when Coronet Magazine published his drawings in 1937. His work inspired the creators of Fantasia.

Something about the proportions of this first one makes her look like a child not an adult.

I'm not sure about the shoulder blade.

Her legs don't seem attached.

Mia - Last Drawing Class

Cathy's last class. I loved the model she could play Suma in the Hymn of the Pearl. She reminded me of Josephine Baker.

JB Drawings - Inspired by Toulouse Lautrec

2nd to last Cathy Karol class we had JB as a model. She did Toulouse Lautrec inspired poses.
