Santa Monica College - Figures in Motion

Interesting Class on Wednesday Night. We did some turnarounds on the head. Animator's like this kind of stuff. In this set we are working on different tilts.
This turnaround on the head is straight on.

We did some caricatures too. I haven't really done that before. I liked it.

Then we did some regular costumed poses. This is the one that turned out the best.

Eaton Canyon

Eric M. held class at Eaton Canyon last Saturday. This is the painting I did. It's finally dry enough to scan.

Renoir in the 20th Century - LA County Museum

I saw this Renoir Exhibit at LACMA the other day. It focuses on Renoir's later years. His hands were quite cramped and crippled and the paintings at some moments became almost grotesque to me.

Portrait of Jean Renoir - one of my husband's favorite directors and son of Piere-Auguste Renoir I've only seen his film "The River."
I feel like he most of had an affair with Gabrielle (she is in the above painting). He paints her a million times and she's always half naked.

I liked the plein air work the best and sometimes I was bothered by the crazy proportions on the figurative work which is very conservative of me (I know - I'm sorry). I fell out of love with the impressionists in my twenties and though I know there is much to learn from them the pinky skin is too much for me. Although it is thought provoking. I liked the sculptures very much and did believe the work served as a bridge to Cubism. I do want to go back and look at the landscape painting and see if there is anything that I may want to incorporate into my own work.

Oil Sketches

This is a drawing I made in Ed Li's class this fall. I decided to go back to the same place and make a painting since I liked the composition.

this is a 5" x 7" oil sketch done around my Condo at Village Green. It was a 4 color limited palette. I might work on the bases of the trees a little more when I have time.

This is an oil sketch done last Saturday at King Gilette Ranch in Malibu.

This is another oil sketch in gray scale done at my condo complex, the Village Green.

Santa Monica College

Linda convinced me to take Kathy Karrol's figure drawing class on Wednesday nights at Santa Monica College.

Sketching Around the Zoo

These are some more sketches from the last 2 weekends at the zoo. It was raining a little. The animals are always moving and I don't know the anatomy well enough to really make it up but I try my best and sometimes they come back to the same position again. Sometimes I even like my drawings. I really never have been to the LA Zoo until this year. It is sort of like a prison for animals. A lot of them look sad and lonely. LA might privatize (sell) the Zoo to help relieve it's financial problems. The zoo is filled with strollers and screaming wild kids on Sundays. It's quite a scene.

Flamingos

Giant Elan

Rhinosaurus

A jaguar drawn by my teacher Joe Weatherly.

More Rhino with pencil and tombo marker.

Zebras with the art pen. My husband likes the drawing of the zebra but.

I forgot what these are called.

Gerenuks, Deers, Antelopes and Bongos

Worked a lot of Gerenuks and things that reminded me of Gerenuks last week.

This is Joe Weatherly (my teacher's) Gerenuk drawing at the zoo.

These are some of my Gerenuks
Here are some Antelopes, Bongos, etc. drawn from taxidermy at the Natural History Museum.

Here are some Gerenuks drawn from rhino house video series.

Figure Drawing - Tuesday - Feb 16th

Messed around with some figure drawing at the Art Director's Guild's uninstructed workshop on Tuesday. I've lost some proportion expertise. This is sanguine pencil on Construction paper. I am kind of digging construction paper these days. And it's cheap.

Giraffes - Zoo/Natural History/Books/Video

I worked on giraffes all this week.

This is Joe Weatherly's drawing at the zoo yesterday.

This is another of my instructor, Joe Weatherly's drawings.

This is my drawing at the Zoo. Joe said the proportions of my legs to my neck are not right in my drawings. Either my neck is too short or my legs are too long. I like this drawing though.

These are some sketches at the zoo, as well as, some copies from Joe's book.

These are some drawings I did from Rhino House DVDs

These are some copies from various books.

This is a mix of copies and my own stuff.

Joe's stuff is still way more 3D than mine but I definately learned some stuff this week about the giraffe.

Figure Drawing at Art Directors Guild

Haven't draw the nude figure in a couple of months. I felt rusty on Tuesday night at the Art Director's Guild. My proportions are off here. The legs are too long.

This one I like although there are probably proportion problems here.

I need to study more back anatomy. I'm not sure what I'm drawing here.

I think I've made my model look too fat.

Again my legs are too long.

Skeleton Drawings - Page Museum

Skeleton Drawings at the Page in Joe Weatherly's Class. He said I had good gesture but not enough volume/3 dimensionality

The drawing above is Joe Weatherly's drawing you can see how it's much more confident and volumetric than mine.

Below are my drawings again. He liked the sloth in the upper left hand corner.
